The chicken sandwiches last night were awesome, the fresh tomatoes more so. I bought four from the produce stand last night, and only one is left today. The first one didn't even make it to the sandwiches...hell, it almost didn't make it home. Mmm...tomato season.

Today's going pretty well...I had Mexican for lunch, but didn't eat much. My current total is just over 1300, and I think I'm going Lean Cuisine (and tomato) tonight. With any luck, that will make around 1600 calories for the day. I haven't worked out yet today, because building this test lab is sucking every minute of my spare work time. I'm planning to sneak out of here during the next server restore and walk the track for 30 minutes, and then do a Kathy when I get home, maybe both upper and lower body but probably just upper and abs. That's contingent on my ability to commandeer the TV in the living room for 30 minutes, though. I'll let you know how it goes.

How's that, Jarrod? ;)

I intended another workout that I didn't get, but I also resisted the (powerful!) urge to go eat Mexican with my co-workers instead of working out in the afternoon, so it balanced out.

Today, I really need to get the water intake up, and keep the calories in the 1300-1500 range. The 1800s are fine, and better than I've been doing for a while, but I really want a 2-lb loss this week. I was at 179 this morning, so I'm hoping to flush out another pound by tomorrow.

I've brought water from home, since access to bottled water at the office has been sporadic, and my planned day falls in the middle of the 1500s. I'm going to see 178 tomorrow--I can feel it.

Calories eaten: lots, probably around 2000-2200
Breakdown(c/p/f): high fat, pretty carbolicious. Probably met my protein goal, though.

Workout: walk, soccer scrimmage w/kids
Workout time: 1:08:41, ~30 min
Average HR: 114 bpm
Calories burned: 380(228)

I wanted to get a strength workout in, but I started to seriously wind down after 8 pm. Besides which, Lost season finale won out over Kathy DVDs.

I was at 181 again this morning, so I'm cautiously optimistic about tomorrow's weigh-in. It probably won't be much, but seeing any loss at all is more progress than I've made in a month. My meal plan for today is pretty light (but, so was yesterday's...it just didn't work out that way), and I'm planning both strength workouts and a walk/run at work. I'm not going to make my biking goal for this week, it appears. A ride doesn't fit into the schedule for today.

My foot still isn't completely healed, but it felt better playing soccer than I expected it to. Because of this, and also because I need one more fitness point at work this month to keep on pace for the quarterly incentive (must have at least 8 per month), I'm going to try very easy run intervals on the track today. The moment I start to feel significant pain, I'll walk out the rest.

Workout time: 26:46 running, 43:37 total
Speed: 4.5 mph run, 4.1 mph overall
Average HR: 156 bpm
Calories burned: 441(132)

My run times are definitely getting faster, though I don't really feel like I'm any faster. I just look down at the stopwatch at the end and see smaller numbers. It's also getting easier to run 2 miles straight through, and my body's tolerating the heat better these days too.

Best part--I'm making all this progress just in time to take a break from running! My heel problem is not getting better. It felt better yesterday because the new shoes had better arch support, I even iced it for a while last night, but getting out of bed this morning was worse than ever.

What used to be heel/arch problems is now pretty much concentrated in the back of my heel. Something is definitely strained there, though I'm not sure if it was caused by my running in spite of arch/heel pain or if the arch pain was caused by this strain in the back of my foot. Whatever the case, running is going to be out until Monday, if not longer. In the meantime, I plan to switch to cycling and weights only for my workouts. I'm going to try to do my lower body weights today, staying mindful of anything that stretches the back of my foot (lunges come to mind).

Rob thinks I should do only upper body workouts until the pain is gone. This is probably a good idea, but I don't want to lose momentum here. I don't really like upper body workouts, and I'm afraid that if I did only those for a week, it'd be unsatisfying and I'd stop wanting to work out altogether. Boredom and frustration are pretty much how I gained back the 8 lbs last summer/fall, so I'm not anxious to jump back into the sloth.

Besides which, we have sort of a contest going right now--Rob, his friend Jarrod (who comments here sometimes), and me. First one to 165 wins. Or in Rob's case, 265. I don't know what the stakes are, if we've even chosen any, but it's a race, dammit, and I intend to win. :)

I bought the Kathy Smith "Lift Weights to Lose Weight" DVDs using part of the amazon giftcard I got through the company fitness program. Since Noah was getting an award yesterday morning (Most outstanding 4th grade choir member--yay!), I stayed home in the morning and worked out at home after the awards ceremony.

I was pleasantly surprised by the DVD...I had emailed Renee about them, because I wanted to get a feel for how perky (read: annoying) and fast-paced (read: impossible for my clumsy ass to master) they were, and she set my mind at ease enough for me to place the order. After doing the upper body workout from vol 1 and the first 3-4 minutes of the abs, I think they're going to work out just fine. I'm still not sure how Kathy's whooping is going to hold up on subsequent workouts...but there wasn't a whole lot of it in this first one, and it wasn't as nerve-grating as I thought it was going to be anyway.

The upper body workout was about 20 minutes, but I went ahead and warmed up with a 1-mile WATP workout beforehand, and then did some of the abs on the Kathy DVD after the upper body. By the time she got to the planks, though, I had to stop. My abs, not so strong they are. (/yoda)

Daily Stats - 5/11/05

On my original plan, yesterday was a 1400 calorie day. After giving in to the siren songs of the Dove promises chocolates in my desk drawer and Berryhill takeout, it didn't quite end up that way.

UPDATE: Hey, I just discovered that yesterday was Eat What You Want Day! Like, officially. So I wasn't PMS-bingeing after all...I was observing a holiday!

Calories eaten: 2534

The run yesterday felt really good...I started slowly, which I think helped with the overall endurance. I also made myself ignore the HRM, which I think helped psychologically. I ran the 2 miles straight through, and even considered for a second upping the run distance to 2.5 miles. But only for a second. :)

Typing that date, I got a strange feeling that it might have been someone's birthday yesterday. I mean, obviously it was someone's birthday yesterday (probably several someones), but I think someone I know. Ah well...it'll come to me. Happy birthday, whoever you are!

Calories burned: 334(117)

I think this machine was calibrated(?) more loosely than the ones I'm used to. I could go much faster at a higher resistance yesterday than I normally can. I could maybe chalk it up to improved fitness level, if it wasn't such a drastic difference. On the high intervals on resistance 6, I got anywhere from 170 to 215 rpm fairly easily. In the ones at my usual gym, it takes the same or greater level of effort to sustain 150-160 rpm for 2 minutes at resistance 5. Both gyms have the newer EFX 546s, too, so I don't know what the deal is.

At any rate, it made the calorie numbers on the machine itself look awesome (over 400 by 30 minutes!), though of course I couldn't really trust them. The HRM calories look closer to the truth to me, and those are the ones I listed above.

So, action-packed weekend, eh?

Now, as promised, the verdict on the $hiner ride...

Next year. Though the heart is willing, the body is weak.

Really, the 22-mile ride was fine. I stopped twice--once at 11 miles and once at around 18 miles (at the gas station on the corner of the Road With No Shoulder). Both times, I was fine to go longer, and was refreshed after just a 5-10 minute break. However, I wasn't just itchin' to go longer, and I think that in order to take on a 90-mile ride, I should have a little bit more desire to go on than I did after just 22...if that makes any sense.

If I'm truly honest with myself, this decision was really made yesterday after the 10-mile ride from hell (see below). About 3 miles into it, it occurred to me that every organized ride I've ever done has been in perfect weather. Even the Katy ride last July was a clear day in the low-to-mid-80s I think. No rainy rides, no hot rides, humid rides, not even any especially windy rides. The one time the weather wasn't postcard-perfect for a ride I registered for, I just didn't show up. So what if May 14th dawns gloomy and cold...give up? Or soldier on miserably for 90 miles? No thanks. Then when I didn't want to ride a quick lap around the neighborhood at the end of the 22-mile ride today, it sort of cinched what I already knew my decision would be. Though I'm sure I could survive the ride, I don't think I can be truly ready for it in just 2 weeks.

Will I be ready next year, though? You bet your ass. :)

*Oh, was I seriously pissed about this one. I woke up on Saturday to 50 degrees and sprinkling, when my weather gnome had CLEARLY told me that it was supposed to be low-60s and partly cloudy. Stubborn mule that I am, I decided to go ahead and try to bike at 7 am in spite of the drizzle, since that is what I had planned and I had confidence in my weather report (*snort*). It was just a sprinkle, and it would clear up any minute, right?

See, what I couldn't really appreciate while standing in my driveway was that the drizzle would graduate to a full-on rain at the precise moment that the wind could blow it directly in my face. The wind was pretty gusty besides, and while the roads were not slippery exactly, they were not in the sort of condition that I felt comfortable riding on a road without a shoulder, even if traffic was light. Only the first and last part of my ride were going to be without a shoulder, but it only takes one panicky jackass to go into a skid and turn me into roadkill. So, that's how it happened that less than 30 minutes after I left the house, I was standing at the gas station 6 miles from home, shivering my ass off, ranting about the weather to Rob on my cell phone, and hating the world.

I waited there for a while, bought a hot chocolate and listened to some of an audiobook on the iPod (and before you even get started with the "you had your ipod with you/You wear headphones when you're riding on the road?!"...I use in-ear headphones and only use the right one while riding. My left ear is completely clear to listen to traffic and other important cues. I'm just as aware of the world around me as if I were driving a car with the radio on, probably more so). I impatiently watched dark clouds blow by in endless waves, with only a peek of blue sky every few minutes to give me false hope. After about an hour, I figured it had gotten about as good as it was going to get...then I waited another 10 minutes for a train to clear the intersection, and rode my defeated ass home by the shorter way. The whole ride was about 10 miles, and I was irate and soggy by the end of it. Stupid lying weather report.

Of course, it was low-70s and partly cloudy about 3 hours later. Sigh. It was great for Noah's soccer game, though! And I walked about 2 hours around the neighborhood after the game, since I felt cheated out of my long bike ride.

Daily stats, among other things - 4/27/05

Calories eaten: 1625 (I know, I can't believe it either)

Workout: 2-mile run (+warmup/cooldown)
Workout time: 45:16

Now, some odd scraps of thought, since I'm going to be busy today and probably won't have a chance to post again...

I've given the Shiner ride some more thought, and I've decided to try a long ride on Saturday to see where I'm at on this. If I can go, say, 50 miles this Saturday, then I think I can safely do 90 on the 14th. The spinning class was cancelled for this week anyway (instructor training), so it's not like I have anything else planned. Noah's soccer game isn't till 3:00, so I'll have a nice block of time available if I start at around 7 am.

Whether I sign up for the ride is also going to depend on how fast I can do 50...if it takes me 6 hours, that pace is not really going to work for 90 miles. If I can average 12 mph or above, that's more reasonable...especially on my hybrid, which is not exactly built for speed.

Also, how I feel afterward is going to be a big deciding factor. The first couple times I did 30-40 miles, I passed out for the next 16 hours or so. While I fully expect there will be some recovery time, I'd rather not be totally out of commission for the entire weekend. Feeling tired would be okay, maybe a little sore is fine...Not being able to keep my eyes open, though? Not so much.

So yeah...long ride this weekend. If I can finish by 11:00-11:30 and stay awake afterward, I'll start adjusting my training schedule for 90 miles on the 14th. Just to be safe, though, I'm not signing up for the ride until the online-registration deadline...if at all.

I'm also considering buying a road bike sometime soon, if the ride on Saturday goes well. I've wanted one for a while, but much like the all-in-one monitoring gadget, it's something that's too expensive to just buy on a whim. It'd be nice to have one for the longer rides, but the hybrid is doing the job right now. Considering's really as far as I've gotten on that little purchase, so we'll see.

------------------------

I'm walking with Speedy Gonzales again this afternoon. I was going to do weights, but I talked to her this morning about a problem and she mentioned walking together. Since I was planning a walk today at home anyway, I figured I'd just swap them--walk in the afternoon, weights at home. Maybe I can make her keep up with me this time. :) (Yeah, I'm so over that insane competitiveness thing...)

------------------------

Though it was extremely unofficial, I did break 180 on the scale yesterday--barely. Man, but it was nice to see a number in the 170s again! I'm still not on pace to get to my fitday goal of 165 by July, but I'm cool with that as long as it keeps movin' on down.

------------------------

Let's see...what else did I have? I can't think of anything. I'm sure as soon as I hit publish, a million other things will come flooding to mind. Right now? That's it, I guess.

I think the run numbers would have been much better if I hadn't had a 2-lb burrito sitting like a rock in my stomach the whole time. I was seriously pissed at myself by the time the workout was over...I had to stop twice for water (temps mid-70s), and I walked part of the last lap because my HR would. not. come. down. As soon as I even thought about jogging again, HR would shoot into the high 170s. While it probably wasn't completely the fault of the burrito (it had an assist from the weather, and also the increased distance), it was the ringleader.

I was bitching and moaning to Rob last night about the run and the burrito, and after a while he got this bemused look on his face.

"And how far did you go?"
"3 1/2 miles."
"In how much time?"
"about 54 minutes."
"And you ran how much of it?"
"2 1/2 miles."

He paused, then said, "My, how far we've come."

Then there was some stuff about Toby Ziegler and the glass being half-empty or half-full. (Referencing the "Commencement" episode of West Wing where Toby buys the house and Zoey gets kidnapped. When Toby buys the house and his ex-wife won't marry him or whatever, there's a scene where she says she's a glass-half-full person and he's glass-half-empty. Then he says, "Can we at least agree it's not full yet?" Point being, I'm Toby in this scenario.)

He's absolutely right, of course. I do have a tendency to forget how far I've come, and I am maybe a little harsh with myself when I don't see continual improvement. The run I did yesterday would have been flat-out impossible for me a month ago, but now I'm beating myself up over having to reduce my speed. The glass may be half-full, but it never fills fast enough to suit me.

All that aside, though...today? I'm running before lunch.

Workout stats - 4/22, 4/23, 4/24

I still haven't worked out the calories eaten, but I keep writing the workout numbers down in various places (the HRM only saves one workout at a time, so I lose the old one when I start a new one). I thought I'd go ahead and log them here so that I don't have to keep track of the notes anymore.

Friday 4/22/05

Time: 1:00:01

Saturday 4/23/05

Calories burned: 589 (206)

Sunday 4/24/05

Workout: 1.8-mile run*, 2.3 miles total distance
Time: 34:26
In-target: 20:11
Run speed: 4.1 mph
Overall speed: 4.0 mph
Avg HR: 151
Calories burned: 333 (117)

The weather made a huge difference on this run, I think. It was beautiful--mid 60s, light breeze, sunshine. It actually felt good to be out there running, and my HR only got up to 166 at its highest point (when I immediately slowed it back down). I felt like I could have gone for longer than I did...and I really wish I had, since I had intended to go 2 miles in the first place (see footnote).

*Grr. I intended to go 2 miles, but I miscalculated the mileage on the road. A route I thought was 1.8 miles was actually 1.6. Sigh. I really should drive the route before I run it, not after. Ah, well.

Workout: 2-mile run (+1 mile of warmup/cooldown)
Workout time: 0:45:34

*Along with the workout calorie count, my HRM provides a percentage of the calories burned that were from fat. I read their explanation of how they determine this, and it's the whole "fat-burning is more efficient at low-to-moderate intensity" thing. That's my gross oversimplification, of course...I'm sure if you google fat-burning or something, it'll have an explanation better than that. Probably with charts. And there'll probably be 15-20 sites telling you what complete bullshit it all is. But whatever.

At any rate, I haven't been including this number because I didn't really care much about it. I mean, if I burn 200 calories in 30 minutes at a low intensity and 50% of them are from fat, or if I burn 300 calories in 30 minutes at a higher intensity and 35% of them are from fat, I'm still coming out ahead by going with the higher intensity, at least from a purely fat-calories-burned standpoint.

But now, I'm considering taking all but my running workouts down into an aerobic HR range...which, according to an article that was sent to me last week but I don't have the URL at the office to link, means under 150 bpm for me.

So, what I want to see is how much my fat-calories numbers will decrease if I do take the intensity down on the Precor and the spinning class (the only two where my HR gets above 150 at my current levels of effort). In order to do this, I need to start paying attention to that percentage.

What that number in parentheses is, then, is the number of calories burned from fat--total calories * % from fat = fat calories.

Since I'm an eediot, I forgot to write down the HRM stats from my first workout yesterday before the second workout overwrote them. I remember the time, and I subtracted the calorie burn from all my other workouts this week from the weekly tally to get the calories, but I don't know the avg HR or the in-zone time.

Daily Stats, 4/12/05 - Straight to hell with you, pizzaboy

As it turns out, pizza is a binge-trigger for me. Who would have guessed that? (um, everyone who has ever known me?)

Calories eaten: 2720 (<---highlight it to embrace the horror...and that number's probably a conservative estimate)
Breakdown(c/p/f): 41/22/35
Water: 2.5L

Workout: strength workout, bike
Workout time: 0:19:41, 1:18:07
Distance: n/a, 16.05 miles
Average speed: n/a, 12.3 mph
In target HR zone: 9:14,1:16:56
Average HR: 120 bpm, 138 bpm
Calories burned: 121, 643

The calorie burn on the workouts was probably enough to redeem me for the pizza, but that's still no excuse. The last two pieces, I just ate because they were there.

*Chest, back, arms, abs. Average 2 sets of 10-12 per exercise, 2-3 exercises per body part, except for abs. Abs were 4 sets of 12, each set in different position. Oh, and 3 30-second planks.

Weights ranged from 3-lb dumbells for most of the shoulder exercises to 40 lbs on that machine I did the rows. I'll try to document this better next time.

Daily Stats - 3/29/05

I had PLANNED to have a Lean Cuisine for dinner to counteract my high-calorie lunch, but then we ordered pizza. I was party to the decision, so it's not like I can even blame it on anyone. Anyway, needless to say it made my food numbers look very, very ugly:

Oh, the humanity!

I also forgot my watch receiver for the HRM at home yesterday, so I didn't wear it for my workout. Taking the numbers from fitday today, though they normally would come from the HRM.

That 35:30 up there was 2.5 miles, and a new personal record time. If my math is right, that put my average mile speed at 4.22 mph. My last personal best for this same distance was 37 minutes.

I was wearing new shoes this time, so that may account for some of it. You know, you always run faster in new shoes. Especially pink ones. ;)
