miscellany

Well, it's done--Rob hid the scale. I woke up this morning, went into the bathroom, and found it gone. This is really the best way to do it, I think...I can't take it out before August if I don't know where it is. I can only obsess about what the hell he has done with my precioussss.

Ahem...what was I saying? Oh yeah, it's for the best.

I went to work early yesterday and walked/ran on the gravel track for about 30 minutes. I made 5 laps, which is 2.5 miles. It felt good, mostly...and way different. The gravel was a better surface than the treadmill, but it was around 80-85 degrees and 70% humidity (at 8 am--welcome to Houston if you're new here), which is a considerably different running climate from the air-conditioned gym I'm used to.

I was a little worried that I would have trouble timing the intervals (2m walk, 90s run for C-to-5k week 2) without the treadmill display, but it turned out that I could time them by the songs on the iPod. Since it shows the time elapsed/time remaining on each song, I kept track of when I started the run and went back to walking when 90 seconds had elapsed. (Have I mentioned lately how totally in love I am with the Mini? Best. Gadget. EVER.) It also worked out that I can get about 1/4 of the way around the track in 90 seconds, so if I forgot Minnie (horrors!) I could measure the intervals that way.

On the last running interval, I started getting a little sick to my stomach. I think that was partly due to heat and partly to not having eaten anything. It passed quickly once I started walking again, but that was the longest 90 seconds of my life. J-Kwon was on the iPod at the time, which was sort of funny. I probably looked a little tipsy right about then.

Speaking of music, I've been looking for a good workout playlist. My tastes are a bit eclectic, and the playlist I use right now has about 80 songs on it. They've all got a reasonable workout beat, and come from genres ranging from Nickel Creek to the aforementioned J-Kwon. I like the variety, but the playlist is so long that sometimes the shuffle play gives me 30 minutes of my b-list crap. Or I'll get 15 minutes of coffeehouse folk when what I really want to do is rock the precor at 150+ rpm for a while. So I'm thinking of creating smaller (but still varied) playlists, but I'm no good at choosing which songs go where. Anyone have suggestions?

Got an email from the running clinic guy yesterday, just when I was beginning to think he was going to take our entry fees and flee to Tahiti (I have trust issues). It had directions to the clinic site, and instructions to bring sunblock and water, and optionally a large portable fan (he may have been joking about that part). This tells me that a lot of the clinic is going to be outside. Joy. We are starting at 7:30 to beat some of the heat, though, so that's good.

I'm pretty fired up about the clinic, even though I'm a little scared that I'm going to be the only novice there. I have visions that it's going to be me and 24 seasoned runners who look like their entire bodies are constructed of beef jerky. Wearing tiny little shorts. The instructor will just refer to me as "Fat One". "Okay, now everyone jog to the end of the street...Fat One, walk if you need to."

If you've been reading my food log, you'd know that it is once again over between me and South Beach. It was actually over about 3 days after it started. It was working and everything, but I just don't like it.

Oh, and you'd also notice that I bought Oreos last night. I do not know what on earth possessed me to buy Oreos last night. Or to eat six of them. Six! Holy buyer's remorse, batman!

Last night, I made that chicken that makes me sing Scarborough Fair--Chicken with Bacon, Tomato and Thyme. It wasn't bad. I think the chicken could have stood more seasoning, or maybe a marinade beforehand. The tomato slices were awesome...but then again, I've become a tomato girl lately. I also made steamed asparagus, which I love and is point-less, so the entire meal came out to 9 points.

The cookies and milk were 12. I spent more points on cookies than I did on dinner. Sigh.

Oh, did I mention that I tried the Applebee's WW menu yesterday? I did. I had the citrus chicken salad and the lemon berry cheesecake. I liked the salad a lot, except that the orange slices tasted like they had gone bad. I pushed them off to the side, and the rest of the salad was fine. I particularly liked the citrus vinaigrette dressing, and thought there was just enough chicken.

The dessert was really good too, but you'd have to be seriously deluding yourself to call it cheesecake. I mean, I'm sure it's made with cream cheese, and it's definitely sweet, which I guess are two of the defining features of cheesecake, but it didn't really resemble "cake" so much as "scoop of pudding". Still, yummy. Not sure it was worth $4, though.

Katy Flatland is this Sunday, and I have done exactly one longish bike ride in the last 6 months. I have not trained at all. That said, I think I'm going to be fine. I'm in reasonably good shape from all the cardio I've been doing, and there are no hills. I can just take it easy if I need to. With this level of training, I'll be happy to make the 30 miles in 3 hours.

Well, back to work!
