I'm considering adding swimming to my fitness routine. I'm not planning on triathlons or anything, but swimming's such a good workout. I'm thinking of adding it once a week.
The problem? The neighborhood pool closes in the winter. I used to have a 24-hour fitness sport membership, but I cancelled it because I didn't use it enough to justify the $37/month expense. Now I'm wondering whether it would be worth it to reinstate that membership and pay the $37/month again, or just pay by the visit, which is something like $10/instance. Or whether I should go to 24-hour fitness at all.
Even if I don't choose 24-hour, I'd prefer somewhere with an indoor pool...even though it never gets THAT cold here in Houston, it's still a little too chilly for swimming outdoors at the times that I'd be going. There's a new YMCA being built about half a mile from my house, but it's not opening till 2004 sometime. And I'm likely going to be moving next year anyway, so there's no point in finding something close to the house.
I am halfway tempted to join some type of gym again, even if it isn't 24-hour fitness. Mostly for the swimming, and also because I miss the elliptical machines, and I'd like to try a yoga or Pilates class or two. I'm just afraid it would be a waste of money, if I used it as infrequently as I did last time.
What do y'all think?

You should find a buddy to go to the gym with you. I was contemplating the same thing as you, weighing the cost with the value of a good workout. I figured the solution was finding someone to go with me. First thing I need to do is find some friends who live within say, 3000 miles of here. hehe. Just a thought. :)
